Samsung’s Impression Phone

Samsungs Impression PhoneSamsung has recently been making a buzz with its new phone offerings that were previewed at the CTIA show in Las Vegas last week. In particular, the new Impression SGH-A877 mobile phone poses a challenge to Apple’s iPhone.

We know a few interesting tidbits of information about the Samsung Impression cell phone. First off, the Impression has a touch-screen display incorporating a radically new technology known as AMOLED, an acronym for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode. The New York Times writes that:

The technology behind it is known as active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or “Amoled”, an acronym that will hopefully have a brief layover on its way to the jargon junkpile, but one that is worth remembering in the short term. That is because these screens make shows and movies easier to watch, with less of a drain on battery life.

Another interesting feature of this Samsung touch screen phone is the sliding QWERTY keyboard. This keyboard is a plus for people who spend lots of time text messaging. The keyboard slides out from the left side of the phone.

Other nifty things to note are 3G network connectivity, a built-in 3.1 megapixel camera which also shoots video, Bluetooth connectivity to other devices, a voice recorder and both music and video support, readable file formats include MPEG4, MP3, WAV, e-AAC+, WMA and AMR. So basically, it doubles as a music cell phone. It also has four-band 2G connectivity support, meaning that you can use it virtually anywhere in the world where there’s cell phone service. The Impression offers up to 16 GB for media storage with its microSD card slot.

In terms of Samsung phone accessories, one headset to strongly consider is the Bluetooth Stereo Pendant Headset (SBH650). This headset is primarily for music lovers. It’s very compact and can easily fit into your shirt pocket, but it also has a clip. Yet this headset operates with its own battery so it needs to be changed after every eight hours of steady use. When you have an incoming call while wearing the headset, the music is paused for you to talk.

The Samsung Impression is already available in the US through AT&T as a free phone with the carrier’s Lets Talk discount promotion. You have a choice of two colors: black or blue.
