Introducing The Sony Ericsson W995 Video Cell Phone
In February Sony Ericsson announced its newest foray in the mobile phone industry at the 2009 GSMA World Congress. The W995 Walkman is unlike any other video cell phone previously offered in the marketplace.
Sony Ericsson’s W995 Walkman will be the first mobile phone sold by the company to incorporate its new Media Go technology. It’s a new way to link video and music files between mobile phones and PCs. Media Go will display video files in such a way that they play with exceptional quality on the screens of Sony Ericsson’s phones.
The company revealed Media Go in its February 15 press release introducing the W995 Walkman.
With Media Go it’s easy to bring your media with you. This unique Sony application makes its worldwide debut on the the W995 Walkman and lets you effortlessly and automatically transfer any audio, photos and videos between your phone and computer. You can even find podcasts with exciting content easily from the directory just two clicks and you’re away, and watch the action in all its glory on the bright clear 2.6 screen.
It has yet to be seen whether Media Go will be as revolutionary as it sounds, but it seems that the new software will be a bit hit for Sony Ericcson if it will make the file transfer process to its phones so easy.
The W995 Walkman as the name implies is also a formidable music cell phone. It supports both MP3 and AAC files and stores them on an 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, which is included in the box. Files can be transferred using a USB cable, which is also included. The phone ships with a set of headphones that plugs into a 3.5 inch standard audio jack.
In terms of connectivity, this quad-band slide phone supports Bluetooth and is Wi-Fi enabled, meaning it will connect to wireless network. To justify Sony Ericcson touting the W995 Walkman as a video phone, it is allows direct Internet access to YouTube, which is another huge advantage over competing phones.
Other nifty features include a voice recorder, an organizer, FM radio, gaming, and even global positioning support. The W995 is available in three colors: black, silver or red.
When viewed on its side the W995 bears an uncanny resemblance to the cassette playing Walkmans offered by Sony in the 1980s. Obviously you can’t compare the two devices, but the media keys on the side of the black phone that I saw pictured and the general slab shape brought back fond memories of the Walkman music players I owned as a teenager.
I almost forgot to mention that the W995 also features an 8.1 megapixel camera with PictBridge support, meaning that you can connect the phone directly to a printer and print out photos.
The W995 Walkman by Sony Ericsson is expected to be available in the second quarter of this year.
