Intel: World’s Smallest Motherboard?

Intel: Worlds Smallest Motherboard?Every computer starts from its motherboard as every other component is pretty much slotted into that. However, while there are many motherboards which can form the basis for mega-super PCs, Intel has gone a different route and presented a next-generation new motherboard called Moorestown at the recent Intel Developers Forum.

Next-generation everything seems to be all the rage these days, but few ever spoke about motherboards among the latest previews or concepts. Nevertheless, it’s impressive and innovative and combines almost all the parts in computer in one small chip. To be more detailed, it includes a processor, memory, graphics chip and has features like 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The motherboard is about ten times smaller than normal ones for PCs and will likely mark Intel’s entry into the mobile phone technology market.

According to Stealth Computers Intel’s engineers have worked very hard to fit all of this in such a compact motherboard.

“Our engineers have been very hard at work on Moorestown,” Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group, said during an IDF keynote speech Wednesday. “The platform design teams have been hard at work in figuring out what is the smallest form factor that they can actually fit a complete PC motherboard into so they can deliver a great mobile Internet experience.”

If all goes well, in a few years our mobile phones and PDAs might have the power of a desktop in a much smaller and more portable package. Well, maybe not quite, but the technology will be significantly more powerful than it is today.
